Celtic Manor CECA Safety Stand-down

This April, companies and organisations from across the UK infrastructure sector took part in a joint national initiative targeting improvements in health, safety and wellbeing for the sector. ‘Stop. Make a Change’ which saw sites, offices and manufacturing facilities stop work from 10.00am until noon on 18 April. This allowed staff and suppliers working there to take time to discuss some of the challenges we face as a sector and how they can be overcome. In 2017 it has been decided to focus on four key issues with organisations making commitments to make beneficial changes in relation to each issue:
   • Respiratory
   • Illness
   • Plant safety
   • Fatigue and mental heath
As part of the CECA Safety stand-down Sisk initiated a joint safety training session with D Morgan which took place on 25th April at their Celtic Manor Project and identified three key drivers for the Safety Stand-down:
   • Open Mind
   • Plant Interface
   • Face Fit Tests
The session commenced with Sisk Project Manager Paul McMaster giving an induction to the whole project team before moving on to present ‘Open Mind’ session with interactive workshops. The D Morgan project team rose to the challenge of delivering Plant Interface and Face fit tests seeing that we had only been on site a matter of weeks.
Our SHEQ Coordinator, Lee Davies presented the Face Fit tests talk which included demonstrations on volunteers and also raised awareness of lung diseases. To complete the half day stand-down Miles Germany, Site Manager and Mark Davies for D Morgan presented ‘Plant Interface’. All the attendees had the opportunity to experience large items of plant, including 20t 360° excavator and articulated dump truck and shown the inherent operational dangers of being around these items of plant.
