Apprenticeships

D Morgan has a long tradition of providing quality apprenticeships and training with our career development. We have former apprentice's who are now receiving more than 30-years long service awards. Our Apprenticeship Schemes and BSc Degree Apprenticeships guarantee that our trainees’ practical development in the workplace is fully compatible with our Civil Engineering needs, the products we use, and the services we offer. We ensure that challenges in the workplace are met head-on with our appropriately trained people.

What we do

Recognising a skills shortage within the construction industry, we proactively commenced our full training and apprenticeship programme in 2013, adding to our already well-established Plant Maintenance Training Program. We now offer an extensive range of apprenticeship opportunities:
  • College Training for Apprentices - at Bircham Newton, near King’s Lynn,Norfolk, and at our own Bold Heath Quarry in Widnes, Cheshire
  • Onsite Training for Apprentices –on a full range of plant that D Morgan operates, including dozer, excavator, articulated dump-truck, tractor and roller, working on a variety of D Morgan’s sites
  • Plant Maintenance Training – at Reaseheath College, Cheshire
  • Advanced Apprenticeships - Iveco Advanced Apprenticeship Programme at Winsford, Cheshire
  • University Graduate Training - with year-out students in Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying
Within the first five years of the full training and apprenticeship programme (2013 – 18), we have already been responsible for: 
  • 103 Plant Operator Apprentices
  • 5 Graduate Quantity Surveyors and Engineers
  • 15 Under Graduate Quantity Surveyors and Engineers 
  • 13 Day Release HNC Engineering Engineers and Estimators

The Complete Apprenticeship Service

The commitment shown by D Morgan’s apprentices to work and training cannot be beaten, and it successfully translates into a remarkable retention rate of 85% of the plant operative apprentices—dramatically better than the average for construction and apprenticeships generally. We believe that this significant outcome reflects the award-winning proactive approach we have to recruitment and training:
  • Largest Number of Earthmoving Plant Operator Apprentices- currently in the country with the CITB
  • Largest Heavy Plant Apprenticeship Programme in the UK– recognised by CECA NW, by awarding a ‘Highly Commended’ in the ‘Social Value’ category for in the UK
  • Construction Operatives in the United Kingdom–largest trainer of apprentices between 2015 and 2019 (at National Bircham Newton Training College, near King’s Lynn)
  • Liverpool John Moores University Employment Fair– our regular attendance, to engage with students and advise on opportunities within the industry and our company.
  • Engagement with Schools, Colleges and Universities– direct communication about Civil Engineering training opportunities
  • Engagement with Our Employees- to encourage under-represented individuals, mainly under 25 year olds, to consider what the industry has to offer

Case Study

A good example of where D Morgan recruited to comply with a Client’s location labour conditions was in 2017: we were approached by the Adult Learning Centre and Liverpool County Council to attend an open day to meet young adults who had little or no working experience. D Morgan has an award-winning training and apprenticeship scheme and whole-heartedly believes in providing opportunities within the local community; we were therefore delighted to be invited to this event. During this event we were approached by Kyle McKenna. We recognised Kyle’s potential and asked him to come to our office for an informal meeting. The outcome is that he is now employed by D Morgan as a Trainee Site Engineer, and he has enrolled on a sponsored course at Liverpool John Moores University. In his short duration at D Morgan, we have already seen Kyle grow in his confidence, and his enthusiasm has touched all the team and Clients he has come in contact with.
