Salford Flood Improvement

Major Development Project:

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) invested £6.8 million in a scheme to protect over 400 properties in the village of Fairbourne from potential tidal and river flooding from the Mawddach estuary. Completed in 2015, the scheme involved strengthening the tidal defences at Fairbourne and Arthog, and rebuilding the rivers Morfa and Henddol. The work included a new flood channel at Henddol, to divert water away from the village. A new area of developing saltmarsh was also created at Morfa Friog, in line with the planning condition for the flood scheme, this area replacing natural tidal habitats which are prevented from developing over the coming years, due to the construction of the scheme.
D Morgan’s significant involvement in the NRW scheme was to create flood alleviation to the River Mawddach, to improve tidal and fluvial flood protection within Fairbourne and the surrounding areas. This included the strengthening of 2kms of flood defence embankments along various stretches of the Mawddach Estuary between Fairbourne and Arthog. Our services included:
  • strengthening of the flood bank at Arthog
  • new sheet piling at Arthog and Mawddach
  • culvert installation
  • realignment and strengthening works to the existing flood bank protecting Fairbourne
  • import, deposit, lay to levels and compact fill to form widened bund
  • import fill to form new bund alignments areas
