New Linkspan Bridge & Associated Quay Wall Works

Major Development Project:

With an overall investment of £10m by its owner-operator, Peel Ports, a new link-span bridge at Heysham Port, Lancashire, was built to increase throughput at this busy port. The investment was made in response to the economic potential brought about by the Bay Gateway link road connecting Heysham directly with the M6 motorway. The port was already recognised as a key gateway for Irish Sea trade, with numerous daily sailings operated by Seatruck, Stena Line and the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. The investment also included a new port entrance and a pontoon for offshore crew transfer vessels.
D Morgan’s dedication and commitment were called upon to undertake the following work on the project:
  • Contracts Manager and Operations Manager allocated exclusively to the project from the outset, to ensure a collaborative and ‘best-for-project’ approach
  • Consideration and effective solutions of major site constraints and project sensitivities, including working alongside the dock wall
  • Organisation of double shift working throughout the night, to allow for effective and safe working around prohibitive high tide timetables
  • Preparation work for the installation of the replacement Linkspan Bankseat
  • Removal of the former bridge unit and Bankseat
  • Effective management of significant amount of reinforced concrete and rock break out
  • Updating of utilities to serve the new Bankseat area
  • Environmental and Quality Management Systems to ensure that the works were delivered safely, with due care for both the environment, and for ensuring the highest quality standards throughout our work

Our Involvement as Principal Contractor:

D Morgan had already gained considerable confidence from Peel Ports from work we had carried out for them previously. Because of this, we were mobilised on site at Heysham Port within a week of receiving a telephone call in September 2017 from the Peel Management Team, asking if D Morgan could tender. Able to respond quickly and proactively to the needs of our Client, we were also able to provide the optimum project development solutions to maximise efficiency, reduce costs and provide surety that the works would be completed with engineering value—on time, and on budget. The Client received the best return for their substantial Civil Engineering investment in responding to the increasing traffic flow through this busy port. Through further negotiation, D Morgan has undertaken further works at Heysham with the Client, including the construction of the small craft berth.
